Measure the insert and cover separately

Use the same unit for every measurement. Put the pillow on a flat surface and measure its outside length and width without compressing or stretching it. Note whether your tape follows the curved surface or measures the straight edge-to-edge span; keep the method consistent.

For a removable cover, check its care instructions before removing it. Lay the empty cover flat, smooth it gently and measure the usable interior panel from seam to seam. Decorative borders, flanges and piping are not necessarily usable space for the insert.

For an envelope closure, note the overlap and usable opening. For a zipper, note the opening length. A cover may have enough interior space but still be difficult to put on a thick or shaped pillow.
